At Spirit of the Dragon we have spent years fine tuning our belt promotion process to support meaningful growth and long-term student success.
One of the most common questions new students ask is
"How long does it take to get a stripe?"
At Spirit of the Dragon, stripes and belts aren’t awarded by simply attending a set number of classes— instead, they are earned through consistent effort, a positive attitude, and dedication in class. Every student progresses at their own pace, guided by their work ethic, respect, and determination. Our instructors are here to help each student grow, improve, and reach their full potential.

Your success is our goal
Belt promotions are a great opportunity for us to work with parents to help their child succeed.
The First and the Final stripe on each belt are especially exciting milestones—perfect opportunities to celebrate achievement and reinforce the core values of Martial Arts
Before earning these stripes, students receive a Promotion Report, which acts as a report card and a powerful motivational tool. It gives parents a chance to provide feedback on how their child’s behavior at home and at school reflects the same values they demonstrate in class.
If areas for growth are identified, instructors work closely with students and parents, offering clear goals and skills to develop before earning their stripe. This process helps students see the connection between effort, behavior, and success—reinforcing the lessons of respect, discipline, and perseverance that carry beyond the training area.
Please note: Promotion Reports are for our children & teens program.

Once a student is ready for their promotion it is time for the Promotion ceremony. This is an exciting moment for everyone and we want to celebrate it.
Here’s how stripe promotions work:
- At the end of class, students who are eligible for a stripe are invited to the promotion area.
- After the congratulations, the instructor will take the student's belt to have their new stripe prepared.
- Students will leave that class without their belt— indicating that they are receiving a new strip and giving them the opportunity to share their accomplishment with others.
- The new stripe is officially presented at the beginning their next class. Parents are welcome to join us in the gym to capture this exciting moment with photos and videos!
Moving from one belt to another is a huge accomplishment.
While each stripe is an exciting achievement, earning a new belt represents the culmination of so many months of hard work. To support different learning styles and set students up for success, we have adapted the traditional belt testing model into a more student-centered approach.
When students are ready to test, they receive an invitation to Testing Class. Testing Class includes a short extension of their regular class, allowing students to work toward their next belt at their own pace. During this time, students demonstrate their skills and receive feedback on areas that need improvement.
Once all required skills have been successfully passed, the student’s official Belt Test will be scheduled.

- Students testing for Yellow, Orange, and Green Belts will present their form in front of their peers as the final portion of their test. This presentation builds confidence and is a huge accomplishment for students of all ages.
- Students testing for Blue Belt and higher will participate in a sparring test with their peers, demonstrating control, determination, skill, and fortitude.
